I’ve moved!

Hey everyone.  I’ve been juggling two blogs for a long time now, because I started tumblr before I started Boiled Architecture.  I was worried that if I discontinued the tumblr blog my readers wouldn’t migrate with me.  Well, I’m hoping you do!

From now on, to catch my blog postings you’ll have to go here.

That’s right—no more blog on tumblr.  My blog lives on Boiled Architecture’s website now.

Keynote Speaker #2: Hannah Davis

Announcing Keynote Speaker #2: Hannah Davis

The next Women Entrepreneurship Retreat, happening May 24-26 in Monterey Bay, will feature three successful female entrepreneurs as keynote speakers.  We already revealed keynote speaker #1, Maren Kate, in this blog post.  Now we’re excited to announce Hannah Davis, founder of Bangs shoe company will also be speaking.

Hannah had no business training and no prior experience as an entrepreneur when she boldly decided to found a company that would both make money and make good happen.

Bangs is a shoe company that improves on the utilitarian standard-issue shoes that millions of Chinese laborers wear.  Hannah was living in China, searching for a way to make a big impact on the world, when her inspiration hit.  Her friend bought a pair of the simple canvas shoes because he thought they were cool.  Maybe there was a way to connect the cool fashion statement to lasting good.

Proceeds from Bangs sales go to grassroots non-profit organizations that focus on sustainable structural improvements developed by the local residents of a developing community, instead of the traditional failed model of philanthropy that simply gives funds/material goods.

Hannah will be talking about how you keep yourself going when you’re in the trenches of growing something whose outcome is uncertain (every new business!). She’ll talk about the importance of good benchmarking, measurement, and other left-brain tools to keep your right-brain excited about the journey.

If you haven’t purchased your ticket to the Women Entrepreneurship Retreat, what are you waiting for?  Check it out here.

You deserve an award

The Collaboration Academy, out of Austin, Texas began a new award program last year called the Collaborators of the Year (COTY), as a way of encouraging Integrated Projects in our industry.  It recognizes highly collaborative projects through an annual award.  Last year the featured speakers were Glenn Ballard and Greg Howell, founders of the Lean Construction Institute.

There is still time to nominate your project for recognition that the whole project team can benefit from.  The deadline is December 7th.  Apply here.

IPD projects are highly encouraged to apply, although because IPD is still in the early phases of adoption they also encourage projects that are highly collaborative within other frameworks to apply.  Projects do need to be at least 75% complete or completed in the last 2 years.  This guideline is there because sometimes project teams start out highly collaborative, but as they enter construction things can fall apart if the team integration isn’t solid.

“Highly collaborative” means different things to different people, so the application process allows you to highlight whatever you believe makes your project special in that regard.

For help applying, there is a liaison named Misa Roja.  Contact her at misa@cimastrategic.com

P.S. I’m one of the judges!
